September 1. Leave the USA.
September 2.. Arrive in Madrid. I will meet you at the airport. We take a bus to Roncesvalles, in the foothills of the Pyrenees.
September 3. Take a taxi (16 miles) to St. Jean Pied de Pont, France. Start over the Pyrenees, walking to Valcarlos, Spain (8 miles, 2,000 ft. ascent).
September 4. Valcarlos to Espinal (12 miles, 2,000 ft. ascent), visitng the church in Roncesvalles where the 12 Peers are buried, the brave knights of Charlamagne slain in the famous battle of Roland near here.
September 5. Espinal to Zubiri (14 miles, mostly descent), through lovely forests on nice paths.
September 6. Zubiri to Pamplona (13 miles, 900 ft. up and down), through forests, charming villages and farmlands. Enjoy the street where the bulls are run and see Ernest Hemingway's statute.
September 7. Pamplona to Puente La Reina (14 miles, 1,200 ft. ascent), up over Alto del Perdon on a mountain trail, with great views of the countryside.
September 8.  Puente La Reina to Estella (13 miles 1,000 ft. up and down), through gently rolling farmland and vineyards, mostly on natural pathways.
September 9. Estella to Los Arcos (13.5 miles, 1,300 ft. ascent), delightful paths through oak and pine forests, over the Monjardin hill.
September 10. Los Arcos to Logrono (17 miles, 900 ft. rolling hills), natural paths and dirt tracks through open farmland into the great wine-producing region of La Rioja. Some short, but steep sections!
September 11. Logrono to Najera (18 miles, 1,000 ft. up and down), natural pathways on the rich red clay soil of La Rioja. This area reminds me of Tuscany, Italy.
September 12. Najera to Santa Domingo de Calzada (13 miles, gently 900 ft. ascent), mostly on wide wonderful country tracks in remote, gently rolling beautiful countryside.
September 13.  Santa Domingo to Belorado (15 miles, 300 ft. ascent), through lots of crop fields, interspersed with small brooks and oak woods.
September 14. Belorado to San Juan de Oretga (15 miles, 1,500 ft. ascent), on paths through the forests of oak and pine in the Oca "Mountains".
September 15. San Juan de Ortega to Burgos (16 miles, 600 ft. ascent), through lovely forests, dropping down into the peaceful valley of Rio Vena and up over Sierra Atapuerca.
September 16. Day in Burgos for sight-seeing.
September 17. Fly home from Madrid.

Rave Review:  “Tyler, Thanks for your calm, collected guiding light to the Camino and Santiago! We would not have taken the first (or probably the last) steps without you!” Jenny Gussick, 2010
