| Packing List, Spain Way of St. James, 2010 |
Weather: Most likely warm, with perhaps a shower. Or a downpour. Be prepared.
Luggage: Bring one daypack with a large waist band so the weight is carried on your hips. You will carry everything.
At the pre-trip meeting I will give a packing demonstration.
These are essentials:
- Travel pouch for passport, credit cards, extra money. For safety, wear this under your clothes, always. Carry day money in a more accessible place. Get cash from one of the many ATM machines.
- High-top hiking boots.
- One extra pair of shoes or walking sandals.
- No cotton jeans, These will not dry quickly.
- No cotton socks. Bring double-layer anti-blister socks, cool-max socks, wool socks with a liner sock.
- One pair of lightweight, quick-dry pants.
- Night wear. I use silk long underwear. There is no privacy!
- Tops: one long sleeve with 30 SPF. One short sleeve. My silk underwear can be worn under both of these.
- Light rain jacket with hood and pants.
- Three pairs of underwear that dry quickly.
- Three pairs of socks.
- Personal toiletries. Chapstick, sunscreen. Use one plastic Hefty zipper baggie to meet airport security.
- Camera, sketchbook or diary.
- A flashlight. I use a headlamp for reading in bed, getting up in the middle of the night or starting early in the morning.
- In a large plastic bag: copies of all documents, such as passport, ATM and credit cards.
- A sheet of labels with friend's addresses. Just peel off the label, attach to postcard to mail home.
- Laundry detergent in double plastic baggies.
- Bring any prescriptions you may need.
- Electricity is the two round plugs.
IF YOU HAVE A PROBLEM with any of the above items, this is not the trip for you.
Small, lightweight bag. (optional but handy) I use in the evening to carry groceries, camera or diary. For going to a museum, grocery store, sightseeing in the afternoon.
Ideas for shopping. Make purchases at the end in Santiago or Madrid. I purchased a Nativity set along the way and had it shipped home.
